Arctic char

Arctic char - Salvelinus alpinus

Arctic char - Salvelinus alpinus

The arctic char is a member of the Salmonid family and is closely related to the better known salmon and trout species.
In general, the chars have a long torpedo-shaped body, have very small scales and a recognisable head.

Chars are anadromous(migrate to the sea) and those that have lived in the sea turn silver in colour, bluish green on the back and with very marked red/pink spots on the sides (around the lateral line).Freshwater chars that have not gone to see are browner in colour, with red/white spots on the flanks, with a reddish belly.

Adult specimens are often tinted a deep pink or red.
