The judicial norms used to licence aquaculture in Italy can be summarised in two categories:
- Best Practice pertaining to the guardianship and maintenance of the environment
- Best Practice concerning the safeguarding of the consumers of aquaculture products (guarantees the quality of the product from a hygiene and safety point of view)
The Lagoon of Marano is one of 46 Italian lagoon areas of international interest, stipulated by the Italian government in accordance with the "Convention for the Safeguard of the Wetlands of International Interest as Habitat of the Aquatic Birds" signed in Ramsar, Iran 1971. As a result, all activities being developed, or underway in the area (including ALMAR clam production) are exposed to a rigorous series of controls from various authorities.
