Reproduction, initial feeding and the production of a large number of viable fry of sea bass and sea bream all take place in the land-based hatchery. The hatchery comprises the Broodstock Department, the Live Food Production Department and the Fry Production Department.
In the broodstock tanks, genetically mature male and female animals in an appropriate ratio are kept under very well controlled conditions of temperature, light, water current velocity and aeration. These conditions are maintained in order to resemble the conditions prevailing in nature for spawning of these species. Eggs and sperm are released into the tank and fertilised. Fertilised eggs are carefully collected at the surface and brought into special incubator tanks.
Eggs are kept in the incubation tanks under strictly controlled conditions, in smoothly aerated and slow moving water, providing an ideal and calm environment with minimum disturbance. The water is firstly sterilized by Ultra Violet light, in order to prevent contamination at this delicate stage. First feeding larvae will require small zooplankton to feed upon.
