The Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) is the main species in the Norwegian aquaculture industry. The county of Nordland is the second largest producer of salmon in the Norwegian counties. By January 1st 2001, Nordland county had 129 licenses for production of salmon and trout, it had 36 licenses for production of smolt and it had 2 licenses for broodstock. The total quantity of salmon and trout slaughtered that year were 82 000 tonnes (of 432 000 tonnes in Norway in total). The development of the sector is strongly regulated by national authorities. In conjunction with a growing number of licenses the quantity produced has steadily increased. However, in the last few years the number of employees in the sector has decreased. This is due to increased effectiveness of the industry.
