Aquaculture in perspective

Future food production must be in tune with the Environment

This section is based on the presentation of
“Can Intensive Aquaculture be Eco-friendly?”,
which was prepared by AKVAFORSK (Norway) and
Biomar AS
, an international fish feed manufacturing group.

Opportunities and obstacles in

aquaculture production

What are the reasons for optimism in the future of meat production by aquaculture?

Can “efficient” aquaculture  be environmentally sound ?

Can “efficient” aquaculture contribute to sustainable food production?

The crucial questions are:

Can we  find more efficient species to culture?

can we  improve the efficiency of the species that we culture
through genetic improvement?

can we  culture more plants and more species lower in the food chain?

can we  move the species that we culture further down the food chain?

can we  find other, under-utilised raw materials and feed ingredients for  use in aquaculture nutrition?

can we   upgrade feed ingredients to improve their nutritional value?

can we   detect, reduce or eliminate feed losses?

can we   improve the value or quality of aquaculture products?

can we   detect and eliminate any lack of sustainability?

The answers to these questions are within our grasp

and are debated in the following pages

based on “Can Intensive Aquaculture be Eco-friendly?”
