Fish Quality

Weather plays a large role in the life of any fisherman. If conditions are not right he  cannot go to sea, so  unfortunately nobody can guarantee a supply of fresh wild fish every day of the year.

Aquaculture, however, offers an advantage in that fish farmers are able to harvest high quality fish all the time.

Always ask your fish retailer for advice on what fish is plentiful and good value  for money.  Remember fish is a very versatile food and one variety can easily be substituted for another in a recipe.

A number of aquaculture products are backed up by Quality Assurance Schemes.  These Schemes have been formulated  to offer the consumer assurance about how the fish are farmed and the way in which they are presented to the market.   These schemes are usually very explicit in terms of the environmental conditions of the farm, fish welfare and husbandry, and the way fish are handled on their way to the retailer.

Quality Assurance schemes are an excellent way to make sure that you are always buying good quality fish.  Often there  will be a choice of Quality Assurance so consumers should ask their retailer what are the characteristics of each scheme.
